Well, so much for getting back to the Dark Tower series. I was going to read through Wolves of the Calla (The Dark Tower, Book 5) so I could be that much closer to finishing the series, but the book has some ties to The Stand: Expanded Edition. It would appear that I wouldn't get the full experience out the Dark Tower if I didn't first finish The Stand. I'm only 160 pages in on a thousand page book. I'm sure you won't see much of me this week in regards to review unless I cheat and read something tiny to fill in. =\

Stop where you are! The Dark Tower series degenerates after Wolves of the Calla... it gets really, really bad in my opinion. I wish I had stopped there when I didn't actually hate Stephen King yet.
ReplyDeleteAnd I wouldn't worry too much about the tie ins, there are a bunch with a lot of his other books in the later Dark Tower books but I didn't feel like it added much.
Seriously, just think up the least satisfying ending you can imagine, read some bad self-insertion fan-fiction and walk away and you will come out ahead.
I've only read the first in the Dark Tower series, but I love The Stand SO much. I would recommend finishing that one first, even if you weren't reading the series.
ReplyDeleteHey Emma - I wonder if he just got tired of attempting to finish it? I'm looking forward to running through it. I hate to not finish things even when they stink. You should see the list of crappy movies that I've watched just so I could know. (maybe that'll become a post on reliq)
ReplyDeleteJennifer - I've been happy with the series so far - minus the filth. The Stand has been pretty fun so far, but it happens to be so long that my book a week doesn't work too well. With work starting up again, I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to read the items I want to. I have way too many 500+ page books.

haha yeah I am terrible about stopping reading things too... there are sooo many series I keep reading way after I hate them!
ReplyDeleteJust stopping by on the hop. I'm now a follower.
ReplyDeleteI Am A Reader
First of all-eschew (I almost said screw, which just sounded rude!) your book a week formula (this from the woman who is trying to read 100+ books this year, but it's always easier to comment on someone else's problems, isn't it!) and finish The Stand. It's worth it.
ReplyDeleteSecond, I loved ALL of the Dark Tower series, including the ending that apparently caused Stephen King hatred in one of your other readers. Hang in there. I agree, however, that the tie ins will make sense regardless of which order you read them in-King often makes reference to events or characters or settings from one story to the next. I consider it a wink to his "constant readers", as he called us in his afterwords.
I wouldn't definitely say that I'm not a constant ready of Stephen King's, but I'm willing to try out a few more of his books after buttoning these up. It might not be this year though(not incl. The Stand & Dark Tower books).
ReplyDeleteThe book a week does work is fits and starts, but definitely gets knocked around with the long books or technically difficult ones. Give me a few Chuck P. books and I think I could read 52 in half the time. =\
BTW, Stand is good so far... ~300pgs in.
