This Week in Our Year

...was pretty quiet on the reading front.  Not so quiet on other fronts.  Should we read All Quiet on the Western Front soon?

But I digress.  We only got around to reviewing one (count it) book this week.  And it wasn't all that great (not the review, the book).  Check the review for Gilead here.  We also begged you to tell us something funny to read and got some interesting responses.  I think I settled on something different.  Tune in next week about this time, to find out what it was.

We promise to read more this week and let you know about it.  -D is almost done with his current read and -L is woefully behind on reading.

The question for this week's Book Blog Hop is do you listen to music whilst reading and if so, what do you listen to?  Well, why don't you open Pandora's box (not a promotion for Pandora, though it is currently on station Ryan Adams)?  How long do you have to discuss this particular topic?  We could start with -D's obsessive need to have "background noise" on.  Then move onto -L's love of peace and quiet, but on her own terms.  Then we could discuss the multitude of musical influences for our reading.  The discussion would end sometime next week, after we play all our favorite songs for you.

Let's just say, we do listen to background noise whilst reading and it is so varied we could not go into it here.  That and most people have never heard of the musicians we appreciate most.

Have a great read this week!

This Week in Our Year

Hello, there readers.  Welcome to Our Year in Books.  In today's edition of This Week in Our Year, we are hopping!  The weekly book blog party is hosted by Jennifer over at Crazy for Books.  Thanks to our hostess!  This week's question is what is your favorite new-to-you author of this year.  Our answers are:

-D: Brandon Sanderson - I've only read his additions to the Wheel of Time series, but that's enough to be happy with him.
-L: Cormac McCarthy - we both read the Road earlier this year and loved it.  We loved it so much we wrote a review together (if you could call it that).

So, this week's goings on around here include:

Review of Metro 2033
Review of The Awakening, followed by a lively discussion (dominated by women) in the comments...any guys out there wish to comment?
Review of A Homemade Life
Review of The Magic of Recluce

Thanks for stopping by!  Feel free to stalk us here or on twitter.  We will at least pay you back by glancing in your general direction.

This Week in our Year

We are seriously considering changing the name of this semi-weekly post to: This Fortnight in Our Year - we shall see.  Again, we didn't get around to doing this post last week so we have a little bit more to catch up on. If you are stopping by through the Book Blog Hop: WELCOME!  We are always glad to meet more people who enjoy reading!  This week's question is: What book are you reading right now?  Our answers:

-L: The Awakening by Kate Chopin
-D: The Magic of Recluse by L.E. Modesitt Jr.; The Stand by Stephen King

In the last couple of weeks, we have slowed down a little bit on the reading, so we don't have a ton to recap.  Here's the rundown of our activities:

Review: Unashamed (quite the discussion of Christian fiction, where do you stand?)
Review: Saki (this is not so much a review, as a strange haiku, but not really that either)
Review: The Grapes of Wrath

Book Talk: the Tim Burton collection (add it to the wishlist)
Book Talk: a Soundtrack for The Grapes of Wrath

This Week in Our Year

Hi!  Welcome to Our Year in Books.  If you are stopping by from the Book Blogger Hop, we are glad to meet you.  If you like what you see here, feel free to stalk follow us either here or on twitter.   I say "us" because we are a husband and wife team of book readers.  We do not read the same genres (most of the time not even close, although she is working on him for some of the classics - thus far to no avail; he has long since stopped trying to convert her to the dark side (literally)).

The question posed for this weeks blog hop was: Why did you start blogging (I am paraphrasing)?  We started blogging because we already had other blogs (his- very neglected, hers - floundering in a world of food bloggers) and we challenged each other to read a book a week for this year.  Once we got started, we realized it was a natural fit for a blog.  We had never read another book blog and thought we were alone in the universe for about 2 months.  Imagine our surprise when we realized there were...others...and lots of you.  If we had known about book blogging, we most likely would have given up, because we would have had to force ourselves to read Twilight and other teen-genre fiction.  Being adults we could not have brought ourselves to do that.  Ignorance is bliss!

So, to review the last week (actually a couple weeks, because we haven't done this post in a while):

-D read and reviewed the last two books written by Robert Jordan in the Wheel of Time series (i.e. not the one written by Sanderson).  Check them out:
-D also read a book out of the Dark Tide Trilogy by Dennis McKiernan - the review is here.
-L read and reviewed the following books:
Oh, We also became television producers for about an hour sometime last week.

We also discussed the great literary merits of just about everything.  Well, D and I did, but we didn't put that on here.  Stick around.  We are happy to have you!

-L

This Week in Our Year

Welcome to the blog.  Greetings to any new readers and a fond hello to our old readers!  This week was pretty eventful at Our Year.  We read 4 different books, resulting in 5 reviews.  Here's the rundown:

Wizard and Glass (Book 4 in the Dark Tower Series) by Steven King
same kind of different as me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore
The Weight of Water by Anita Shreeve

Lastly, our book paths crossed this week, resulting in two reviews for the same book: The Jesus Manifesto by Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola.  If you are only mildly interested in reading a scathing review without all the time commitment, read -D's review here.  If you are fully interested in reading a scathing review and have about 20 minutes to kill, read -L's review here.   If you are not interested in all, we suggest you skip it all together.

Thanks for stopping by!  Please leave a comment or feel free to stalk us by clicking follow at the top of the page.
